2-year-old tricks

Well, James did a lot of not so funny things this week. I guess we were spending too much time at home during spring break and he decided to pull out some of his old 2-year-old tricks; his favorite being unrolling an entire roll of toilet paper into the toilet and then flushing. Lucky for me, our toilet takes so long to refill that I caught him every time before he could flush it a second time and overflow the toilet. There seemed to be a bathroom theme because he also smeared toothpaste all over the top of the toilet seat and the vanity and then tried to “clean it up” with a baby wipe. And, he did a little redecorating in my bathroom with my mascara. The funny part of all this was that every time he came and told me, “I did that.” What else . . . hmmm . . . oh, this one is pretty much just funny. I put James on time out after the mascara thing. I was pretty mad that he was into all my stuff. When I put him in his bed I could smell that he had slathered on a fair amount of my mango lotion. Then he sobbed, “I nee a ba ba.” I just said, “Uh, no.” Then he kind of coughed like he was trying to clear his throat a couple of times. “Did you eat lotion?” I asked. He just said, “Yes,” and then, “I nee a ba ba.” I said, “No,” again. He hasn’t eaten lotion again.

My wegs 'r cold

We were going to go out to eat yesterday and James had on shorts and his rash guard. So I said, “James, do you want some pants so your legs won’t be cold?” “No,” “Do you want some socks with your crocs?” “No, I’n okay, I’n okay.” When we got to Los Cabos, Russ got James out of the car for me and James said, “My wegs ‘r cold.” The funny part was that he wasn’t complaining that his legs were cold, just making a general observation that his legs were cold.

I no wanna miss him

Yesterday we were out and about and James wanted to go see Gramma, so I called Jerry and Linda’s house and there was no answer. I told James that I didn’t think Gramma was home because no one answered the phone. He said, “It’s okay. Gramma’s takin’ a shower. We go Gramma’s house.” We were pretty close, so I went ahead and drove over there. He still didn’t believe that Gramma wasn’t home until we called her cell phone and he talked to her after no one answered the door. We ended up meeting them at Costco so James could see them. So, no worries, everything ended happy.

This isn’t a funny story but, earlier last week, out of nowhere, James said, “Where’s Papa Dean an Gramma Weesa?” I told him they were in Hawaii at their house. Then he said, “In Awahi? I need go Azil an see Nate. I miss him. I no wanna miss him.” That broke my heart just a little bit.

Goggles

On Thursday evening, the girls were getting ready for swimming lessons. James ran back to his room and came out a few minutes later wearing his swim trunks and a pair of kid-size, play, safety goggles and said, “I’n ready a swimming wessons. I got my goggles!” I guess James is trying to tell us it’s time to sign him up for swimming lessons, too.

Hi-ee

James came over to Mike and me (I was holding Patrick) on the couch and said in a deep little boy voice, “Hi Dad. Hi Mom.” Then he got all smiley and high pitched and said with a lilt, “Hi-ee Patrick.” He’s a very proud big brother. Everywhere we go he tells people, “At’s my brudder.”

Patrick's a Boy

James has some trouble with his pronouns and keeps saying, “I wan hold her,” when referring to Patrick. Then we say, “Him. You want to hold him.” Then James says, “It’s not him.” We say, “Yes, him. Patrick is a boy.” James: “It’s not a boy!” Us: “Is Patrick a girl?” James: “No, it’s not a girl. It’s baby Patrick.” We’ve been round and round with him on this one several times this week. Then today I said, “Patrick is a boy. He has a pee pee like yours. That’s why he’s a boy.” The light bulb went off and James said, “Ooohhh. Patrick’s a boy wike me.”

Ketchup Cake

Well, Genevieve’s birthday is coming up on Wednesday, so we celebrated tonight at Sunday dinner with all the Nylands. Genevieve requested a “Littlest Pet Shop” cake. (Littlest Pet Shop is a genre of toys like My Little Pony or Polly Pockets or Barbie). Anyway, James has been known to enjoy playing Littlest Pet Shop on occasion, but he can’t say it right. He calls them widdowiss ketchup or just ketchup for short. So, he was really excited about the cake and kept saying, “I wan da ketchup cake!” I wonder what an actual ketchup cake would taste like.

Last week sometime, James was pointing to my belly button (which has completely popped out now) and said, “At’s baby Patrick.” He has said that before so I tried to explain to him that that was my belly button and that baby Patrick was inside my belly. But, he just kept pointing to my belly button and saying, “No, at’s baby Patrick.” Since we’re getting really close to baby Patrick being born, I was really wanting James to have a better understanding of what was going on. So, I found a short illustrated video clip on the internet that showed the pregnant mom and then a cross section so you could see the baby inside. I think a light bulb went off for James at that moment ‘cause he said, “Ohhhh, baby Patrick INSIDE mommy’s bewwy.” Now he wants to watch that video clip on the internet several times a day and keeps asking to see baby Patrick on the ‘puter.

Okay, so one more. James is completely wii obsessed. He has actually gotten really good at wii bowling and consistently bowls about a 200. Anyway, he also really likes to be other people’s mii’s. His favorite last week was his buddy Gabe. But then, one time, he said, “I wan be James. I wike him.” Ha ha. What a funny kid.
